This course is delivered at the Botanical Gardens Birmingham and designed for those wishing to develop the principles and skills to work in the countryside. It provides a taster of the broad range of activities undertaken by someone working in the countryside - from managing an estate as a gamekeeper to monitoring animal populations or keeping a river healthy for fishing and maintaining the countryside environment such as trees wood and forests. You may be just starting out, or taking a break from a job to get some valuable training

Course content
You complete a selection of units including some of the following: • Undertake work related experience in the land-based industries • Environmental and land-based business • Participate in providing estate maintenance • Tractor driving • Introduction to boundary habitat conservation • Introduction to coastal zone management • Introduction to countryside access and recreation • Undertaking ecological surveys and techniques • Understanding ecology of trees, woods and forests • Introduction to freshwater and wetland conservation • Introduction to game management • Introduction to environmental studies • Conservation and improvement of British habitats
Entry Requirements
A keen interest in gardening and the outdoors. 4 GCSE's at grade D including Maths and English. A supporting school/college or employer reference is required
Progression
Level 3 Horticulture or Countryside Management or equivalent
