The countryside requires expert management if its resources are to be conserved and developed. This course provides the management skills to make decisions, solve problems, and plan for the future. Students gain a sound practical training and have the opportunity to develop a wide range of interests through assignment and practical work.

Kingston Maurward's excellent technical and practical facilities are backed up by work experience in the countryside. Accepted as entry qualification for degree courses, being equivalent to three A levels. Popular with mature students.

Course Content

As part of the Level 3 Extended Diploma you will complete the following:
All units from the Level 3 Diploma in Countryside Management plus:

  • Work experience
  • Livestock in conservation management
  • Archaeology and landscape history
  • Woodland habitat management
  • Pest and vermin controls
  • Upland habitats

A period of work experience is required which may be undertaken during the course or the college holiday breaks.

Year 1: 4 days per week
Year 2: 3 days per week.

Additional Qualifications

  • Chainsaws.

Students may need to pay full costs for additional optional qualifications.

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade C or above preferably including Maths and English and preferably a Science. Or a relevant Level 2 Diploma (Distinction) or a Level 2 Work-based Diploma in Environmental Conservation (NVQ) with good levels of Maths and English. Mature applicants who lack these qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience, a keen active interest in the countryside and the ability to cope with written work is required. To top up to the Extended Diploma, successful completion of the first year Level 3 Subsidiary or 90 Credit Diploma in the relevant subject is required.

A range of careers including countryside ranger, or a warden at a country park or nature reserve, estate, woodland or recreational area. Environmental education officer or interpretation officer. Rights of Way officer. Higher Education.
