Media Studies Level Two BTEC Diploma
This is a one year vocational course, designed to develop practical skills. It provides a well recognized qualification for employment into the Media sector. It will begin to reveal, through hands on activities, just how much the Media shapes and influences who we are.
You will be doing ‘bite-sized’ units that have a practical focus; these will be project based, with a definite finished outcome to each.
Topics will include how the Media industry works in practice, through the core units on research into a Media production, and an introduction to Media audiences and products. The course will encourage you to develop your existing interests wherever possible, through options within units; e.g. researching jobs in the media, you could focus on games reviewing or news reporting etc.
The course is equivalent to four GCSEs and is a recognised qualification which links with the level 3 Media AS Level, and would also offer a good set of skills for other A Level courses, in particular AS Film and AS Photography.
Course Structure
Core units (Mandatory) Introduction to media industries. Research for media production Introduction to media audiences and products Specialist units (Specialist units) Video production Photography techniques Advertising production Factual Production for the Creative Media Media Production ProjectMethods of Teaching and Learning
Lessons are a mixture of practical workshops, hands on project work in groups and theory based lessons aimed to provide you with the required skills to underpin your own creative work. All tasks will be as close to real life working projects as possible, and often based on ‘live’ industry briefs.
Assessment
All course units are assessed through regular small chunks of coursework; the students will be expected to keep a portfolio, and will be given regular indications as to their progress, and ways to improve. Assignments are internally marked; an external verifier will check our marking for accuracy and consistency at the end of the year.
Enrichment Courses
All BTEC students should be prepared to take advantage of the range of enrichment activities available at St Brendan’s. This will further their knowledge and enjoyment of their chosen interests. In particular, film making enrichment is an ideal option. Involvement with the local Media Industries in the area will be encouraged wherever possible. St Brendan’s is looking to strengthen links with local Media industries, like ITV Youth Workshops, Watershed cinema and Endemol.
Resources
The Media Department has outstanding resources that have underpinned our superb results over the last five years. We have a dedicated and highly experienced Media technician, who is invaluable to the students’ success.
We have a newly constructed Digital Editing Suite, with computers equipped with Adobe Premiere Pro, and a range of Digital Film and Still Image Cameras.
All equipment is available for student use, although a condition of borrowing will be that students contact their insurance company to cover temporary borrowing.
Progression
Progression onto the level 3 Media AS level, and the course offers applicable skills for other A Level courses, in particular AS Film and AS Photography. This is also a good vocational course, offering core skills for future employment, and to Diploma courses in Film production at HE if desired.
Entry Requirements
A range of grade D and E grades at GCSE. You should have an interest in the Media and be open to learning new skills, especially with the use of technical equipment; it is not a requirement to have used cameras etc prior to joining the course, but you must be open to learning new skills when you start.
Charges
There are no extra charges on this course. However, an adjustment to insurance policies will be expected, before students can borrow Media equipment outside of the college grounds. Also, for large files, the ownership of a computer memory stick is strongly advisable.
