This practical course will provide the foundation and understanding of the photographic requirements of the media industry. It will improve the images you produce and make them more suitable for professional publication. You will also appreciate the importance of a high quality visual image. Everyone has access to camera technology these days but this course will allow you to develop a basic knowledge to produce a more appropriate image for publication.

It will not simply be a photographic course; you will be learning to take images for a specific purpose. The course will be practical but supported by class discussions and critiques to allow the sharing of knowledge and experience.

The tutor will design several practical tasks that are as near to real-life situations as possible. These might include capturing emergency services in training, theatre photo calls, sporting events, Very Important Person (VIP) visits – the projects will be based on what is going on in Nottingham during the course. These will be used to help students understand the basic issues and problems with press photography. We will learn as a group and reflect on our individual work during group debriefing sessions.

The course will be delivered with classroom sessions that lead to practical photographic experience. There will be some one-to-one but the group will be relatively small so we can comfortably learn together.

This course is ideal if you appreciate the value of a good press image and understand the requirements to create this type of result. The more able learners will be able to produce these results themselves. It is aimed at self-motivated individuals who are prepared to experiment in a challenging media. You will need a degree of self confidence and the ability to interact will the public. A basic photographic knowledge is an advantage.
