Paramedic Practice – DipHE

"A poorly run course, badly organised with no sense of overall structure. Subject to last minute changes to the schedule with little or no notice given to students. Lectureres seem at odds with each other over certain elements of the training and there tare inconsistencies over the distribution of marks during essay marking and practical exams. Unprofessional and amateur. Look elsewhere for your training, don't waste your time here." - 27-12-2013 21:22

What is a paramedic?
Paramedics are the senior members of accident and emergency ambulance crews. They are trained in all aspects of pre-hospital emergency care and deal with emergency medical illness and traumatic injury.

Paramedics treat and stabilise patients at the scene of their accident or illness. In dealing with seriously ill or injured patients, your skills as a paramedic can often mean the difference between life and death.

This course

Learn how to combine theory and practice to meet the challenges of providing pre-hospital care, on this well-established course. You learn important skills as a paramedic that gives you the ability to treat and stabilise patients at the scene of an accident or emergency. This training gives you the knowledge to perform potentially lifesaving procedures whenever they are needed.

All places on this course are currently commissioned, which means that as a student you do not pay any course fees.

Most weeks you study for two days at the University and spend two days on placement. Your clinical placements are either with Yorkshire Ambulance Service or East Midlands Ambulance Service. This enables you to gain experience and apply your university-based learning to real life situations.

We provide modern facilities to help you develop clinical skills and specialist knowledge for your career. The course is normally based in our £13 million purpose-built Robert Winston Building on our Collegiate Crescent Campus. Here, clinical suites in the building replicate the hospital and community settings in which you learn and work.

You study some interprofessional education modules alongside students from other health disciplines, such as nurses, radiographers and midwives. This shared learning experience allows you to develop teamworking and understand the contribution different professionals make. This understanding is vital to modern healthcare practice.

Additional qualifications
As well as your paramedic qualification you also gain other certificates important for your career. In induction week, you will gain a HSE approved First Aid at Work Certificate. And as part of the course you complete a level 2 award in health awareness, which provides you with a certificate from the Royal Society for Public Health. We are currently the only university in the UK that offers this as part of our healthcare courses.

Key areas of study
Key areas include • preparation for paramedic practice • professional issues in paramedic practice • scientific basis • methods of enquiry.
