The Programme is a joint venture between the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice (LOROS) and De Montfort University. LOROS is a recognised centre of excellence in the delivery of palliative care and the provision of palliative care education.

The bulk of teaching on the programme will be delivered by clinical staff from the hospice and members of the broader health and social care community involved in the planning, organisation and delivery of palliative care services locally, regionally and nationally. In addition, although housed within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences|, the programme will draw upon cross-faculty resources to optimise the learning opportunities for students.

The MSc Palliative Care programme is made up of core and option modules. There are two core modules within the programme: the final ‘Dissertation’ module and ‘Research Designs in Health’.

The extensive range of option modules within the programme allows individuals to tailor their learning to their specific needs and interests. Various areas can be explored such as:

Key facts

Duration: Up to two years full time and three - six years part-time

Location: Most modules delivered at the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice (LOROS) with some delivered at City campus, De Montfort University

Attendance: Days of attendance differ between modules and so too the pattern of attendance. Some modules run on consecutive days while others run on a day per week basis over a number of weeks

Start date: September 2014. Module intakes also in January 2015 and May 2015

Entry and admission criteria

Standard Entry Requirements

  • An Honours degree (an equivalent of a British honours degree at 2:2 or above), an overseas equivalent or have evidence of working at postgraduate level
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they have experience in the care of patients who have palliative care needs. This can be either as a health or social care practitioner or as an experienced voluntary care worker
  • All applicants should be able to supply two references, one giving emphasis to academic ability and the second their relevant clinical experience

  • International applicants must have an English language score of 6.5 IELTS or above

Non-Standard Entry Requirements

In exceptional circumstances, consideration may be given to a student who meets the following criteria:

  • Holds a professional qualification as a health or social care practitioner or is a non-professional undertaking voluntary work which involves patients with palliative care needs
  • Is able to supply two references giving emphasis to academic ability and clinical experience
  • Can demonstrate their expertise, for example, through change management and/or leadership through a Professional Portfolio
  • Demonstrate successful study at level 6 or above
  • At the discretion of the Programme Leader there may be the requirement for the student to undertake a piece of work that demonstrates their academic ability prior to acceptance on the programme
  • International applicants must have an English language score of 6.5 IELTS or above

Teaching and assessment

Application of theory to professional practice is emphasised throughout the course. Assessment includes oral presentations, reflective accounts, case study reports, essays, a research proposal, and a dissertation.

Course modules

You must complete a total of 180 credits to be awarded the MSc. Of these, 90 credits are from the two compulsory modules.

This module designed to consolidate and/or develop basic knowledge in research methods.
30 credits MPHE 5007 Dissertation
This module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to undertake a major piece of original research, which will incorporate and test both the academic and practice elements of the course.
60 credits Option Modules MSc Palliative Care Optional Modules MPHE 5301 Principles and Practice of Palliative Care|
This module aims to enable the student to explore and critically evaluate the principles and practice of palliative care within a holistic framework of care. This module will equip the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide excellence in the provision of end of life care for dying patients with advanced progressive incurable disease.

MPHE 5302 Effective Support for People Living with Advanced Illness|
This module aims to enable the student to explore and critically evaluate the nature and breadth of the challenges to an individual’s “personhood” in the face of advanced illness and the strategies that may be employed.

MPHE 5309 Advance Care Planning|
This module aims to enable the student to explore the concept of advance care planning from the patient’s perspective taking into account the legal, ethical and service delivery dimensions.
30 credits MPHE 5206 Advanced Communication Skills for Healthcare Professionals|
This module is designed to enable participants to critique and challenge their own communication skills and to utilise and apply theoretical concepts to enhance their ability to elicit and respond to patients' problems, worries and concerns and deal more effectively with difficult communication situations. The student will demonstrate critical reasoning in the selection of appropriate communication skills and strategies and their application in a range of situations. This will include verbal, non-verbal, listening and empathetic responses to demonstrate assessment skills and provision of complex information.
30 credits MPHE 5204 Developing Health and Professional Practice through Independent Study|
This module allows the student to develop and explore in depth an area of developing and/or developed health and professional practice. In negotiation with their manager or the module leader, an area of new or continuing developed study will be identified. Building on prior achievements concerning the student's knowledge and experience the student will take forward an area of developing health and professional practice using the framework of independent contracted learning.
15 credits MPHE 5307 Ethical Dilemmas in Palliative Care|
This module aims to enable the student to explore concepts underpinning effective palliative care practice, recognising the influence of contemporary debate and the impact of professional guidelines and associated legislation.
15 credits MPHE 5308 Understanding the Experience of Living with Non Malignant Disease|
This module aims to enable the student to appreciate the holistic needs of people living with advanced non malignant conditions across the disease trajectory.
15 credits MPHE 5306 Advanced Symptom Management|
This module aims to enable the student to develop a detailed understanding of the causes, presentation, assessment and management of symptoms associated with advanced life-limiting illness. The module explores issues relevant to patients with oncology and non-oncology related problems and seeks to relate interventions to a detailed understanding of underpinning anatomy and physiology.

Academic expertise

Staff members at LOROS are highly skilled palliative care practitioners and educationalists with the clinical and educational knowledge and expertise essential to the delivery of a masters level course. They are familiar with the evidence-base informing palliative care practice and the wide range of accompanying issues and debates.

Visiting lecturers will contribute to the modules to broaden your perspective of palliative care practice regionally and nationally. Many staff members at both DMU and LOROS are actively involved in undertaking research.

Graduate careers

Completing the course will support your career progression to more senior posts within health and social care organisations or within higher education institutions. This course will also help you to advance both your own practice and equip you with the change management skills to advance the practice of others.

Fees and funding

Those working in the NHS may be eligible for funding from the Education Commission Unit of the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority.
