This exciting course develops your understanding of the broad subject of music. You will explore music performance, composition, music theory and harmony, live sound, the music industry, improvisation and music technology, and take part in a number of public performances. Initially in year one you will study for a Subsidiary Diploma. Successful students will be invited to study for the Extended Diploma which they will complete in year two of the course.

A wide range of music and media related themes will be studied
including live performance skills (including band performance
skills, individual performance techniques, improvisation and world
music), composition and songwriting, sound recording and
computer-based music production, live sound, the music industry,
and the planning preparation and staging of a number of public
performances. Personal effectiveness and professional development
units provide time for students to research the music and media
industries and define the qualities, qualifications and skills
reqired to find employment. Access to careers advice allows
learners to look at all the opportunities open to them to study
music performance or media at a higher level. Additional learning
and pastoral support is offered through the tutorial system. As
part of the course students are required to demonstrate specific
literacy, numeracy and ICT skills alongside their main subject
studies. These Functional Skills will help students with their
coursework and also prepare them for further education life and
work.
This course is taught through a range of approaches designed to
provide learners with the opportunity to develop technical skills,
practical applications and vocational real world experience.
Opportunities for the planning and involvement with events and live
projects are integral to the qualification.With our specialist
computer music suites, rehearsal rooms, music performance space and
recording studios, this BTEC Diploma offers students a chance to
develop their skills for the professional workplace or advanced
level courses. Delivery methods will include practical workshop
sessions in our recording studios, computer music suites, rehearsal
rooms and live performance spaces, classroom-based theory sessions
supported by IT and computer-based research, real-world music,
industry situations (live performances, recording sessions,
structured rehearsal sessions etc), and educational visits to
venues, live performances and other music industry-related work
places.
During the first year of the programme students will work towards a Music BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to 1 A level). Successful students will be able to progress onto the second year of the programme where they will work towards either a Music BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A levels) or Music BTEC Level 3 Diploma (equivalent to 2 A levels). Throughout the duration of the programme students will take part in a number of varied public performances, develop a portfolio of work, their music industry knowledge, and their skills to help them to further their music career and find employment, or support an application for a higher education course. Additional learning and pastoral support is offered through the tutorial system.
Four GCSE grades A* - C including English Language and preferably Maths, a Higher Diploma at grade C or above with Functional Skills Level 2, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma with a Merit profile with Functional Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy. All applicants will be interviewed and auditioned on their first instrument (including vocals). A satisfactory reference is required.
You could progress to a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma in a music/music performance-related subject, or enter the music industry at a junior level.
