This is a fascinating course which seeks to develop an understanding of communication and culture. AS Level looks at the personal level of communication and our own experiences of cultural products and practices. A2 Level takes a more critical approach, exploring a wide range of views on culture and everyday life. At both AS and A2 Level you will produce a portfolio of work which includes both written and creative technical pieces. Fictions explores the transmission of culture through stories, fairy stories, films, novels and video games etc. Objects of desire explores cultural products; items that are invested with meaning in a cultural context. More specifically, these are the goods of consumer society, the items that we are encouraged to covet, to buy, to own and to cherish.

The Programme Content

Two units are explored in the AS year and two more follow into A2. There is a 50% split between coursework and a final exam in both years. The first two units focus on the basics of communications and culture, understanding new concepts and applying them to everyday life situations. The second unit is coursework based and requires you to develop a portfolio, responding to a series of questions set by the exam board and directly relating to current cultural and communication issues. The final part of this assessment takes the form of an electronic presentation which allows you to experiment with new communication technologies. In the second year, you will begin to develop an awareness of wider communication and cultural issues and will complete a practical case study. This is an exciting course which combines both the personal and creative with academic discourse allowing students to explore their personal and cultural identity with context.
