There are estimated to be around 750,000 people in the UK who are living with Dementia, and as the population of the UK is ageing, the number of people diagnosed with this condition is rising. Despite excellent levels of care from service providers around the country, there is much to be done if this level of person-centred care is to be upheld. This unique part-time programme aims to transform the care experience and quality of life of people with dementia. The goal is to achieve better awareness, early diagnosis and high quality treatment at every stage and in every setting within dementia services.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate in-depth appreciation of the characteristics of dementia and apply this to dementia care.
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current evidence and policy.
  • Provide expert care for the person with Dementia and be able to explain the rationale for care strategies.
  • Demonstrate critical and insightful self-awareness of own attitudes, feelings, behaviours, and coping strategies to effectively manage care relationships.
  • Role model effective and accountable leadership to ensure members of your team are effectively trained and well supported in delivering compassionate person-centred care.
Course Structure

This part-time course is structured into 3 academic years, each worth 60 credits.

Year 1

  • Foundations of Person-Centred Dementia Care
  • Advanced Practice in Dementia Care
  • Leadership for Champions of Dementia Care

Year 2

  • Service Improvement and Development or Innovation and Practice
  • Healthcare Law and Ethics
  • Foundations of End of Life Care or Advanced Communication Skills

Year 3

  • Introduction to Research Methods
  • Transforming the Service
Assessment will be via a number of case studies and enquiry-based learning scenarios, portfolio activities, presentations and online contributions.

Entry Requirements Entry Requirement

Applicants must have:

  • an undergraduate degree OR
  • show evidence of ability to study at Masters level OR
  • have a relevant professional background
Students for whom English is a Foreign language

We welcome applications from students whose first language is not English or those whose degree was not taught in English. To ensure such students benefit fully from postgraduate study, we require evidence of proficiency in English. We also will require a certain standard to be achieved on the written element of the test. Our usual entry requirements are as follows:

  • IELTS: 7.0 (minimum 7.0 in all component)
  • TOEFL: Internet-based score of 98 (minimum 22 in all components and 23 in speaking)
  • PTE: 70 (minimum 70 in all components)

All scores must be less than two years old.
