Course Code: F0015 Course Length: 2 years Entry Requirements:The entry requirements for the programme are:• Successful
interview with the Course Team
• An inherent interest in Dementia Care
• Relevant Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care (this
may not be relevant for mature applicants.)
• Relevant experience of Dementia Care either as a formal or an
informal Carer.
All successful candidates will need to have a least one day per
week working, either voluntarily or paid, in a Dementia Care
setting. The role of this will be to assist the student with
applying new knowledge into practice, thereby developing
skills.
(Although GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above are not a
requirement for this course, these will be recommended for students
who do not hold them at enrolment in order to assist academic
progression. Students will be able to apply to undertake these
qualifications alongside the programme should they wish to do
so).
The Certificate/Diploma will align the learning to the Common
Core Principles for Supporting People with Dementia developed in
2011. There are a core group of Principles which have been embedded
within the content of the Course and which are supported by Skills
for Health, Skills for Care and the Department for Health in the
following core areas:
- Principles of self care
- Principles for supporting people with dementia
- Principles for working with carers
- Principles of end of life care
- Personalisation - key principles of self directed support
The Certificate/Diploma of Higher Education in Dementia Care will run over 2 academic years. In year 1 students will undertake 120 credits worth of learning at Level 4 and in year 2, 120 credits at Level 5.
The modules on the Certificate/Diploma of Higher Education in Dementia Care include a range of assessment methods. The assessment types include portfolio based evidence, open book exams, essays, case studies, presentations, seminars and Personal Development Plans in order to ensure that all assessment preferences are covered and to assess students in a range of methods.
Academic Progression:On completing the programme, progression opportunities for successful students could include the BSc Nursing and BA Professional Studies at UEA, and the BA Leadership and Management at CCN.
Career Progression:The aim of the Certificate/Diploma of Higher Education will be to prepare students for direct work with people in the social care sector.Students on the course will gain invaluable knowledge and skills which will assist their understanding of the complex nature of this disease. Skills for Care have recognised that this course will be an active way of growing a young workforce in an area of deficit.
