This one year / one A Level equivalent qualification will develop the knowledge and awareness in the use of science within sport to enhance future performance. Following successful completion of this course students can progress onto the L3 Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences the following year.
This course can be studied alongside one of the many Sports Clubs that are on offer.
This course is a specialist work-related course. It will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for employment in coaching, teaching, instructing, sports therapy, sports development, operations and recreation or for working in education.

Each pathway will include additional qualifications to give the students the best opportunities for future development.
Course content
Students will study 6 units that will encompass the many facets of sports science. Many of these will be taught in a practical and involving way to help the learners develop their knowledge and skills.
- Anatomy for Sport & Exercise Sciences
- Sport and Exercise Physiology
- Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Research Methods
- Fitness Testing
- Fitness Training

Entry Requirements
A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above including English OR Mathematics (or equivalent), or BTEC Level 2 Diploma with Merit grade in sport, or other Level 2 sport qualifications. Students wishing to study this course should have an interest in science and a minimum of a GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) in Science.
Delivery & Assessment methods
There will be a range of methods used to assess understanding and knowledge. These methods will include: Written reports Presentations Practical assessment and analysis Posters Group work
Progression
This course prepares students for the L3 Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences that students can progress on to the following year. Following this course students could go on to working in the sports industry or for continuing on to higher education to study sports degrees around the country or the Foundation Degree in Sport and Exercise that Birmingham Metropolitan College runs in collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton.
