Course Level: Level 1 Course Duration: 1 year Days at College 3 or 4 days Course DescriptionLevel 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies (Horse Care) is a foundation programme aimed at individuals with an interest in horse care who may require some support in achieving their career aims. Students will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and practical skills in horse care alongside the more general skills required to gain employment or to continue training.
Time will be split between classroom activities and practical work in the Equine yard.

Students will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and practical skills in horse care alongside the more general skills required to gain employment or to continue training.
Time will be split between classroom activities and practical work in the Equine yard.
Entry RequirementsFormal qualifications are not required but you will need to demonstrate an interest in the course and a willingness to learn. Entry will be agreed through an interview process and results of Initial Assessment. It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Entry 3.
What You Will StudyThe following subject areas will be studied:
- Developing personal performance
- Caring for horses
- Feeding and watering horses
- Horse health
- Horse handling and exercise
- Work experience
- Safe and effective working practices
Functional Skills
You will also work towards nationally recognised Functional Skills qualifications (English, Maths and ICT).
What Next?Successful students may continue on to a Level 2 programme, such as the Diploma in Horse Care or the Diploma in Animal Care. Alternatively, students may wish to work towards a work-based Apprenticeship or gain employment in a relevant industry such as Apprenticeship as a Groom/Yard help.
