Course Content
This 10 week course is specifically designed for the first time horse owner, parents who look after their children's ponies, potential owners or anyone who has a love of horses. It provides a straightforward and uncluttered guide to the care and management of the horse in a fun and informal setting.
The course is a mixture of classroom based theory sessions with some practical sessions at Manor Stables working with our horses. For an additional exam fee of £20, you may sit an optional written assessment to achieve Horse Owners Certificate Level 1.
- Grooming kits and grooming methods
- Tack − including safe use and fit of saddlery
- How to handle horses safely and understand how they react and think
- Shoeing horses
- Basic feeding and watering rules for all seasons
- How to keep horses healthy and recognise ill health
- Points of the horse and markings
- Tips for buying a horse
There is a short written paper at the end of the course to achieve the Horse Owners Certificate.
Entry Requirements
An interest in horses! Minimum age for this course is 14 years old. Tetanus protection is recommended.
What Next?
This is the first of four British Horse Society progressive horse knowledge and care courses. Move on to Level 2 courses taught at the college.
