For prospective students who are currently employed there is a part-time route.

What can this course lead to?

You will have access to coaching and fitness training opportunities with individuals, and junior and senior clubs. You are eligible for relevant honours degree programmes at the University of Cumbria (eg. BA(hons) Coaching and Sport Development) and will have enhanced your employability in sport coaching and instruction, in the leisure and sport development industry, in fitness and personal training, or in the uniformed services.

Resources and facilities

You will have access to a sports centre which boasts a large, multi-purpose sports hall and an air conditioned fitness suite with 12 cardiovascular stations, eight fixed weight stations and a free weights area. 80 UCAS tariff points.

GCSE at grade C or above in English.

Course summary

You acquire knowledge of the coaching process as you develop your own practical coaching skills across a variety of sports. You learn through a range of practical coaching modules, independent study, and vocational experiences throughout the course. In addition you are encouraged to gain national governing body coaching awards during your studies.

As a coach it is essential that you are able to assess the physical, technical and mental prowess of your performers, and then know how to devise a suitable development programme. The skills you learn in the fitness and training modules complement your coaching skills, and give you confidence to work with groups of different ages, motivations and abilities.

The final component of the course introduces some key aspects of sport development. It highlights national and regional schemes and policies in sport, and you will gain a practical understanding of the development of sport within clubs, agencies and communities.
