The Football Development Programme aims to develop students as football coaches, giving them opportunities to gain practical coaching experience in a range of sporting environments.
Course Code: A0097 Course Length: One year progressing onto a two year Extended Diploma Course Schedule: 3-4 days a week which vary due to timetabling Entry Requirements:Six GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and Science; or GNVQ Intermediate in a related subject; or BTEC First Diploma in a related subject at Merit level. Sport at representative level and/or recommendation of coach is desirable. Experience coaching football at any level is desirable.
Core Skills:The Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science Football Development Programme is a one year course containing 12 units including:
Anatomy for Sport and Exercise
Sport and Exercise Physiology
Sport and Exercise Psychology
Research Project
Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Sciences
Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
Sports Nutrition
Sports Injuries
Performance Analysis
Practical Team Sports
Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise
Upon successful completion of these 12 units you will progress onto the Extended Diploma completing 6 more units to achieve the equivilant to 3 A-Levels. In addition to this you will also become a Level 2 Qualified Gym Instructor and gain your Level 2 Leadership in Football qualification.
The 6 units for the Extended Diploma are:
Sports Coaching
Biomechanics in Action
Exercise for Specific Groups
Fitness Training and Programming
Work Experience
Sports Massage or Applied Sport Psychology
All of the above units will be taught in 3 or 4 week blocks which will include all of the unit input and assessments methods for that particular unit.
Assessment:Modules will draw on different assessment strategies which will include assignments (primarily), practical assessment activities, group work, end of module tests, presentations (individual/group), peer group assessments.

Within the department we offer a Foundation Degree in Sport Health and Exercise and a full BSc (Hons) in Applied Sport, Health and Exercise.
Career Progression:This course will prepare you for a choice of interesting and worthwhile careers in the sport and fitness industry for example:
Teaching
Sports Science
Coaching
Personal Training/Gym instruction
Over the two years within the full Extended Diploma you will study 18 units of work which is the equivalent to three A Levels.
In addition you'll have the opportunity to gain the additional qualification - Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) YMCA Level 2 - which is valued by employers.
Additional study is required to complete the course which includes a minimum of 15 hours per week home-based study.
Costs:There will be a cost to purchase a Sports Science Football Development Programme uniform which is compulsory, plus you will need some portfolio's and may choose to purchase necessary textbooks. This can be discussed at interview.
