Our PGCE Primary courses are popular and very successful; they get consistently high ratings from students, external examiners, inspectors and employers. They are delivered by highly committed and effective university and workplace-based tutors. You study two modules at Masters level, reflecting the very high standards achieved by students on this course. On completion of your PGCE, you can seek accreditation (of 40 credits) towards our MA in Education when you return to study later in your career.

What can this course lead to?

This course can lead to a fulfilling career as a primary teacher.

As this is a Postgraduate Certificate in Education it includes some work at Masters level (level 7). This recognises the high levels achieved by students on this programme and rewards this with 40 Masters level credits that can be used to count towards an MA in Education.

Course summary

Meeting children’s and young people’s needs within and beyond the curriculum is a level 6 module which enables student teachers to understand the diverse needs of children and factors which contribute to these needs. The module also provides strategies and knowledge of services to facilitate the ability to meet these needs within a mainstream setting.

The Creative and Effective Curriculum is a level 7 module, which enables student teachers to develop independent strategies for planning and teaching effective learning opportunities, informed by their analysis and synthesis of a variety of theoretical frameworks, evidenced in research and literature. Student teachers will engage in recognising the tensions and dilemmas associated with the interface between theory and practice and evaluate and reflect upon their planning and practice and the concept of a reflective practitioner.

Reflective Practice is a level 7 module which enables student teachers to consistently develop as meta-reflective practitioners through the integration of theory and practice.

Pedagogical Excellence in Key Stage 1 and 2 is a module designed to provide student teachers with the opportunities to develop the enthusiasm, confidence, skills and key knowledge to be effective primary school teachers.
