This course is appropriate for a student interested in working as a junior chef or in a service role within the hospitality industry, but who has few or no qualifications from school. Qualified skilled staff are more likely to gain employment and this qualification represents an introduction to the industry. Whilst working towards this certificate
students will be able to develop skills in many areas

- How to work in a team (essential in any busy kitchen)
Functional skills (English, maths and IT) are also an important
part of the course and the work produced for your course will offer
you the greatest opportunity to develop these skills. For example,
if you take part in a role play or discussion, you could be
developing your communication skills which will improve your
English. At least one functional skill will accompany your course
at an appropriate level for you.
In addition to your main qualification and functional skill you
will also undertake a personal development qualification.

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements. However students are expected to show a positive attitude to learning and the potential to progress.
Assessment:
Assessment is continuous with regular feedback to students. The qualification will be assessed through assignments, a food safety test and a final practical test.
Progression from this course:
Successful completion of this course may enable individuals to progress onto the level 1 diploma course or into employment.

Course Costs:
All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials / resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. There is a start-up cost of approx £80 for the course, which will be used to provide specific items to help you achieve. There is also a requirement to wear uniform for practical classes. This uniform will be specified at interview and an order form provided. Uniform and knives will cost around £190. Students within our department will have a number of trips and visits which will be compulsory. These trips will be subsidised through the use of student tips, generated in the restaurant.
