Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Veterinary Nursing) Level 3

This programme is designed to provide students with the skills and technical grounding for them to provide a useful contribution in their employment within the industry.

Programme content includes:
- Animal sciences
- Work related experience
- Anatomy and physiology
- Animal housing and welfare
- Animal health and handling

There is one of three vocationally relevant pathways that can be studied within year 2:
- Animal nursing careers
- Animal establishment careers
- Animal retail careers

The veterinary nursing pathway includes some animal nursing units in the second year. Students do not qualify as veterinary nurses with this qualification - the pathway is designed to give a flavour of veterinary nursing areas.

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

Students should be at least 16 years old and be able to show an enthusiastic and positive interest in an animal career.

External applicants will require 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C (including maths, English and science).Completion of a full level 2 diploma at merit level or above in science or animal care is acceptable. Two suitable references from an appropriate animal based work placement are encouraged.

Internal applicants will require a full level 2 qualification at merit or distinction level and full successful completion of existing course footprint (i.e functional skills) supported by a strong attendance and behaviour record. For some students an agreement will be reached to comply with an academic contract. Consideration will be given to exceptional circumstances.

Assessment:

This programme is continually assessed by a combination of written tests, projects, assignment work and demonstration of competence in a range of practical tasks

Progression from this course:

In the first academic year learners will study units towards the subsidiary diploma in animal management - progression onto the second year to extended diploma will depend on individual learner achievement and course director decision.

Students who successfully complete the programme may progress onto a higher education or other programmes leading to a foundation or full honours degree programme. NPTC programmes provide the potential for equivalent UCAS point scoring compared to 3 A levels.

Opportunities in employment include wildlife parks, animal welfare associations, veterinary practice, research institutions and animal retail businesses.

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials / resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). Essential course equipment: boiler suit / white lab coat / work boots - information will be given at interview.
