animal care industry - this could be the course for you.
This two year, 180 credit qualification offers a great variety of
study within animal care. Within the selected units of study, you
will have every opportunity to develop your skills in caring for a
wide range of animals and their varying environments.
We are also offering the Extended Diploma with a specific science
route (in the second year) which could lead you on to veterinary or

equipping you with the specialist science units needed to progress
on to the higher level.
Course Content
Year 1
- Animal anatomy and physiology
- Carry out farm livestock husbandry
- Animal accommodation and feeding
- Animal handling and safe working
- Animal behaviour and communication
- Animal biology
- Understand and promote animal health
- Animal welfare and breed development
- Exotic animal health and husbandry
Year 2 Level 2
- Award in Work Skills
- Investigative project in the land-based sector
- Wildlife population surveys, ecology and conservation
- Animal nursing
- Wildlife management and rehabilitation
- Kennel and cattery management
- Aquatics husbandry and management
- Breeding and genetics
- Nutrition
- Work-related experience in the land-based industries
The units for the science route in the second year includes fundamentals of science and chemistry for biology technicians (instead of nursing and kennel and cattery management.)
A short study tour will take place at the end of the year (this is optional and at an additional cost.)
Four days a week at college to include a mix of lectures, demonstrations and practical work.
Days - Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays
Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs Grade C or above - to include English Language, Science and Maths, Level 2 qualification in animal care with distinction or an NVQ 2 in an animal related area. . Recent experience in an animal care establishment is essential.
Progression/Employment
Foundation Degree in Animal Conservation and Welfare, zoo keeper or veterinary nurse training. Self-employment or a wide range of employment opportunities including zoos, animal sanctuaries, farm parks, RSPCA, wildlife organisations, pet stores and more.

Full Time Further EducationYour learning is FREE if you are a UK or EU student, aged under 19 years on 31st August in the academic year you start your course.
Aged over 19? The cost of a full-time course for the academic year 2012/13 (starting September 2012) will be £1,250 per year.
