Who is this course for?

This course is for you if you have a keen interest in the catering industry and wish to pursue a career in a professional kitchen.

What will I do on the course?

This course will develop your knowledge and skills in the preparation and service of food. Who is this course for?

This course is for you if you have a keen interest in the catering industry and wish to pursue a career in a professional kitchen.

What will I do on the course?

This course will develop your knowledge and skills in the preparation and service of food. You will be based in the College's training kitchen and restaurant and have the opportunity to work in all areas to gain good practical experience. You will study a range of topics including kitchen operations; costs and menu planning; fish and shellfish; meat and offal; poultry; desserts and puddings; bakery products; healthier food and special diets. You will also learn practical restaurant skills; customer service and teamworking skills. In addition, you will learn skills that are required in any career choice, including health & safety, confidence building, social and practical skills, and English and Maths. We also offer English and Maths GCSE resits.

What qualifications do I need?

  • 4 GCSEs Grade D or above, OR
  • VRQ Level 1 Diploma in Cookery and Food Service
  • Adequate standard of English and Maths
  • Mature learners with other qualifications and/or experience are also welcomed
  • You should have a strong interest in working in the catering and hospitality sector and demonstrate a commitment to succeed

One year - full-time

What could I do after completing the course?

Further Education:

  • VRQ Professional Cookery - Level 3

Employment:

  • Chef working in hotels, restaurants, public houses, hospitals, prisons, fast food or specialist cafes
  • Food and beverage service staff


Are there any additional costs?

Learners will be required to purchase their own personal equipment. Also a uniform is required to work in the kitchen and restaurant, prices and details will be discussed at interview. Bursary funds may be available to help with additional costs.
