BA (Hons) Social Work with Adults (Post-Qualifying) (Part Time)

If you are a qualified social care worker, or holder of a relevant professional qualification, this course will enable you to develop your skills and knowledge in order to undertake analysis of the needs of people who use social care services.

You will learn how to apply your research knowledge to practice and extend your professional competence within a specialist area.

This BA (Hons) Social Work with Adults degree has been accredited by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). The Post Qualifying Specialist Award in Social Work with Adults will be awarded to all qualified, registered social workers, on completion of the course.

Course content

On the course you will study the following units during your 18 months with us:

• Consolidation Unit
• Mentoring, Enabling Learning and Assessing Competence in the Workplace
• Legislation and Applied Social Policy
• Adult Development and Transitions
• Participation, Partnerships and Networks
• Prevention, Intervention and Protection.

Assessment

Each unit will have a practice assessed element, which is graded either pass or fail. A pass must be achieved in order to complete the unit. Candidates will be linked with identified Practice Assessors by their employers, who will provide the practice assessment for them.

Special features

The course is part of a wider programme of Adult Social Care which includes Social Housing, and enables you to undergo common inter-professional learning within three of the units. A particular feature of the award is an innovative approach to a dissertation or major project in which students from each profession will work collaboratively to research an aspect of inter-professional working that is of concern to them and/or their organisation. Southampton Solent University has close working relationships with agency partners and with two local service user groups who are involved in providing advice, teaching and assessment on the course.

Options available

Standard route

The standard part-time route incorporates University based study on Thursdays and Fridays at approximately two-weekly intervals, with some gaps to allow students to complete written and practice assignments. There is a total of 24 taught days in Year 1 and 8 taught days in Year 2. Students are given additional study leave by their employing organisation.

Flexible mode of delivery

In addition to the part-time mode of course delivery, you may study on a flexible part-time basis. In such cases, you must agree with the course leader which units you will study each academic year. Students should complete at least 2 units in any one year and aim to complete the course within three years of starting. You will be expected to attend the sessions timetabled for delivery of the unit to part-time students.
