This course involves using your analytical skills to investigate many areas of the media. You will study visual aspects, narrative style and the ways in which the world is represented to us. You will also explore the many components of the media and consider topics such as controlling the media. As part of this course students create their own media product. You will learn about many aspects of the media and the wide
range of institutions that make up the media. You will learn in
groups and develop your analytical skills whilst considering the
influence and style of the media. Your course will involve
exploring the different institutions which produce the media, eg
television, film, the press, magazines, radio and new media. Your
study will include the following: Unit 1: Foundation portfolio in
media; Unit 2: Key media concepts (TV drama); Unit 3: Advanced
portfolio in media; Unit 4: Critical perspectives in media.
The course is assessed through a combination of coursework and
timed examinations in both the first and second year.
Your Media Studies AS level can be a stand-alone qualification or lead on to A2 study. You may have the opportunity of visiting Pinewood Studios and various BBC productions. You will have your own specialist personal tutor who you will meet individually or as part of a group tutorial and they will help you set, review and achieve your targets. There is an extensive programme of support to help you make higher education decisions and move on to university. The vast majority of A level students progress successfully to higher education.There is an extensive programme of enrichment opportunities on offer and you will be encouraged to select from a range including volunteering, work experience, sport and performing.
Six GCSEs grade A* - C including English Language. A minimum of a D grade at AS allows you to progress on to your second year of study.
You could progress to a higher level of study such as a degree in media, film studies, journalism or English, or seek employment. Employment could be as a Journalist for a magazine or newspaper, or working at a radio or TV station. Alternatively you could work in public relations as an Account Executive.
