This programme allows students to extend and consolidate their studies and to further develop individual interests and specialisms supported by our broad range of specialist staff. Students will develop their own practice whilst working collaboratively with other disciplines in college. Students will develop skills that will equip them to respond to changing economic conditions, to develop an ability to work in different environments and to seek out diverse opportunities within the creative industries.

Students are encouraged to be adaptable, flexible and able to work with a broad range of people in different contexts. We also promote entrepreneurial activities supporting students in seeking out opportunities for themselves and others.

Learning is supported through close contact with a range of creative specialists with access to specialist workshops and studios. This allows us to promote individuality and tailor the programme to suit individual needs.

Throughout the programme, teaching and learning strategies adopted by tutors will acknowledge and encourage a range of learning styles. The programme aims to provide a academic knowledge and research literacy preparing a student for a specialist area and/or cross-disciplinary practices and importantly a wide range of career opportunities. There are opportunities to assimilate actively, apply, question, debate and reflect critically developing critical awareness and personal literacy.

Opportunities to asses individual qualities and capabilities. We use a range of teaching and learning strategies. The strategies aim to help you think, make, take risks, play, utilise and source materials, reflect, evaluate and consider the impact of yourself and others in a broader context. Throughout the programme, teaching and learning strategies adopted by tutors will acknowledge and encourage a range of learning styles.

The programme aims to provide a balance between provision of information and opportunities to assimilate actively, apply, question, debate and reflect critically. Students will be encouraged to develop an awareness of current research and practice through lectures, seminars and tutorials, and access to international research in the field of Creative Arts through library resources at the College and Oxford Brookes University. Case study examples and lecturers’ own research will also be used, as appropriate, throughout the programme. Students will become part of a community of creative people studying at Oxford Brookes University, Banbury and Reading Colleges.

The modules are delivered through a variety of techniques to suit all learning styles. The teaching and learning strategies will include: practical sessions, workshop programmes, presentations, student-led seminars and peer criticisms. The assessment you undergo will be both formative and summative: Formative - designed to provide you with feedback on your progress and inform you of your ongoing development.

Formative assessments, such as in-class discussions, presentations, activities, do not form part of your grade. You will receive verbal and/or written feedback after the formative assessments and it is very important that you reflect on both the feedback and your performance at the formative stage.

Summative - designed to provide a measure of your achievement in respect of your performance in relation to the intended learning outcomes of your programme of study. Summative marks help to indicate your performance for the whole module and will determine your progression on the course. Resources You will be provided with a suitably equipped place to work when attending College that will include access to specialist staff, IT facilities and other learning resources which will be appropriate for the nature of work you will be required to undertake. Additionally, the College offers a wide range of other resources and facilities including additional learning support, which will be available to you, further details of which can found in the Higher Education Student Handbook.

As well as being enrolled at Banbury and Bicester College and Reading College you will also be enrolled with Oxford Brookes University and so will benefit from the same facilities and services as on-campus students. These include: use of Brookes’ libraries, Centre for Sport and Students’ Union, study support and mentoring and professional advice and information from Brookes’ Career and Employment Centre.

Typical offers include:
• A Foundation Degree in Creative Arts and Design Practice awarded by Oxford Brookes University, achieving 240 credits and normally a 55% grade average achieved at Level 5.
• A Foundation Degree in Creative Arts and Design Practice or related disciplines in Art and Design, achieving 240 credits and normally a 55% grade average achieved at Level 5, subject to individual credit rating by Oxford Brookes University.
• A Higher National Diploma delivered by Banbury and Bicester College, achieving 240 credits with normally a Merit profile at level 5 under Art and Design QAA Subject Benchmark.
• A Higher National Diploma from another institution, achieving 240 credits with normally a Merit profile at level 5 under Art and Design QAA Subject Benchmark.
• Applications are welcomed from candidates with appropriate alternative qualifications and from mature students. Typically we transfer credit for part of a British degree course, a university degree from another country or Open University courses.

All prospective students on the BA (Hons) Creative Arts and Design Practice are required to attend an interview either in-person or on Skype video conferencing and/ or on the phone. An art and design portfolio is required at interview and this should include evidence of an appropriate standard of visual literacy as well as a sample of written work that demonstrates an ability to study at Level 6. An electronic portfolio will be accepted in cases where an in- person interview is not possible.

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate that their English language skills are high enough to succeed in their studies by meeting the University Standard English Language requirements. Applicants requiring a student visa to enter the UK will need to meet the UK Border Agency’s (UKBA) minimum language requirements as well as the University Standard English Language requirements.

Expected career destinations for graduates includes being employed/ self-employed as graphic designers, textile designers, makers, illustrators or photographers, gallery and museum-related employment, and community-based project work. In addition, it is expected that some graduates will wish to pursue further study at postgraduate level either in a specific discipline or to pursue a career in teaching.
