This award is designed to meet the needs of candidates who wish to develop skills and knowledge in order to gain employment in a 3D design discipline within the creative industries. The awards also prepare candidates for progression to degree level studies in 3D Design. The qualifications comprise core design studies, which underpin and inform a selected specialist design discipline studied by candidates. Candidates would normally study only one of these specialist areas of design activity but there may be some Units in related design subjects.
The award will supersede most courses currently on offer within areas such as Product Design, Exhibition Design, Jewellery Making and Model Making.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The following access recommendations are for guidance only. They are not exhaustive or mutually exclusive but it is advisable that candidates demonstrate competence in one of the following.
- SQA National Units and courses in relevant areas at Higher level.
- SQA Scottish Group Award (SGA) in Art and Design at Intermediate 2 level, with additional appropriate Highers.
- SQA SGA in Art and Design at Higher level.
- SQA SGA at Advanced Higher level in Art and Design or other relevant awards.
- GCE ‘A' level in Art and Design related subjects and other relevant GCE awards.
Experience, life skills and potential ability would also be taken into account.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The assessment strategy of the SQA Design Principles - to encourage a more holistic approach to assessment - has been adopted in this award. The new HN Unit specification places the emphasis on reducing the assessment load for both candidates and centres by devising assessments that assess the entire Unit or join the assessments of Outcomes together. The Graded Units will be a project in the form of a practical assignment, covering a range of knowledge and/or skills achieved through studying the mandatory Units.

Employment opportunities may relate directly to the specialist discipline which each candidate follows. Market research suggests that candidates who gain this HND vocational qualification may have employment opportunities in the following areas:

- Theatre or film production
- Design consultancies
