General & First Session:

If you have any of the following items please bring them to the first lesson but do not purchase them specifically for the course until after the first class. KAE is unable to offer refunds for materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

A4 size sketchbook, 2B/4B pencil or graphite, 2-3 sheets of A1 size sugar or cartridge paper, box of assorted charcoal sticks, 2 charcoal tree sticks, white chalk/ coloured chalks, putty rubber.

Students can also use support and materials of their choice such as pastels, acrylics, watercolours or oils. Individual choice of materials will be discussed and advice will be given. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Course Aim & Objectives:

The course aims to establish a method of painting the human form, support individual expression, self-evaluation and the production of creative work from observation. The course will aim to support and develop existing knowledge and practical skills in life drawing and painting from observation. An Individual Learning Plan will be set up for your preferred additional areas of study at the beginning of the course. We will focus on studio practical work and a model will be available every week. You will be able to work with both art materials and technique of your choice and encouraged to develop your individual style of expression. Course work will include set projects. These will be supported by visual references to contemporary examples of work and instruction on relevant topics as necessary

Assessment:

There will be continuous, informal assessment, advice and feedback on practical work produced within the course.

On this course you will develop the following skills and knowledge:

  • Establish and develop a working method for painting
  • Produce preparatory drawings from observation
  • Produce paintings from observation
  • Develop methods of self-reflection and self-evaluate work produced
  • Be introduced to contemporary visual examples
  • Use information technology to support your learning
  • Extend your knowledge through individual study such as library research, internet research and visits to art galleries

Progression:

The course can be useful for people who wish attend similar art courses within Kingston Adult Education or who wish to apply to further art courses.
