Who is the course for?

This course is idea for people who have completed Watercolours for Beginners, or have some
experience in drawing and painting and would like to refresh and improve their creative skills.
What will I study?
You will explore a variety of Watercolour techniques and learn how to use watercolour paints,
paper and brushes creatively and effectively. By the end of the course you should be able to:
Demonstrate good drawing & observational skills.
Have explored and be able to demonstrate the control & flow of watercolour application.
Demonstrate transparent washes & overlays.
Recognise the importance of drying times and maintaining hard edges.
Recognise and record comparative tonal values.
Use colours informed by colour theory, & show how local colour becomes tonal when affected by
light & shade.
Develop your touch & handling to be in sympathy with form & content.
Demonstrate a range of watercolour painting techniques e.g. bleeding, graduated fades, wet into
wet, washes & overlays.
Know how/when to let the water do some of the work.
Practice deconstructing & transcribing painting(s) by watercolour masters.
You will have gained confidence in and extended your artistic and creative abilities
How is the course taught?
The tutor will do an initial assessment (an individual learning plan) to discover your starting point,
find out what you want to get out of the course, take any previous knowledge you have into
account, and plan how best to support you. He will demonstrate techniques, show inspiring examples and provide hand-outs to support your learning. You will learn by experience, demonstration, group work, whole class talks covering resource materials, methods and examples as well as practical activities, formal and informal 1:1 discussion and feedback during the class.
How will I be assessed?
The tutor will do an initial assessment (ILP-Individual Learning Plan) to work out how best to support you– to discover your previous experience (if any), what you want to get out of the course, what your personal goals are. You will learn by experience, demonstration, group work - and practice! The tutor will give advice, demonstrate techniques, and give handouts to support your learning. You will look at the work of other artists for inspiration, and your progress will be reviewed by lots of regular feedback and guidance from the tutor both on a 1:1 basis and as part of

Full Fee (Full fees for courses of 15 weeks or more can be paid in two instalments. You must include the first half with your enrolment)

Fee B

If you are:

  • aged 16-18 years old on an accredited course
  • on Job Seeker's Allowance or on Employment Support Allowance (Work-Related Activity Group)
  • unemployed and in receipt of a means tested benefit (or are dependent of someone who is unemployed and in receipt of a means tested benefit) and sign a Declaration of Intention to enter employment
  • aged 19-23 studying for a first full Level 2 qualification and do not already have a full Level 2 qualification or equivalent
  • aged 19-24 studying for a first full Level 3 qualification and you do not already have a full Level 3 qualification or equivalent
  • studying GCSE English or maths and do not already have a grade C or above
  • studying an accredited English or maths course
  • studying an entry or Level 1 accredited course and are aged 19-23 and have prior attainment below full Level 2. (This does not apply to ESOL courses)
  • taking part in a Family Learning activity

Fee C

Exam fees are non-refundable and payable at enrolment. In some cases exam fees are to be confirmed.
