The course is designed for students who wish to explore and extend all areas of 2D and 3D art. Students will be able to try out different materials and processes and explore the many ways fine artists communicate visual ideas. In the second year, you can choose to specialise or retain a more open approach to your work; the emphasis will be on self expression, conceptual thinking, and visual meaning in order to build an extensive and exciting portfolio. Students may also follow another subject related qualification with this course.

The course includes life and general observation drawing, art history lectures, teambuilding activities, film studies, short (one-day) projects, group project work and specialist workshops from visiting artists.

End Qualification:

BTEC Extended Diploma in General Art and Design (equivalent to 3 A levels)
You will work towards the 90 credit subsidiary diploma qualification in the first year of the course and will achieve the extended diploma in the second year.

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

5 GCSE's grade C or above, with a minimum grade C or above in either English or Maths and a creative subject. Vocational qualifications in relevant subjects will be accepted as GCSE equivalent. Alternatively, successful completion of a BTEC level 2 diploma at merit grade is also acceptable. You will be required to successfully pass an interview with a demonstration of enthusiasm and commitment towards the subject area and bring examples of craft and art work. Individual cases will be considered on their own merits.

Applications from mature students without formal qualification are welcomed. You will be invited to attend an interview and will be required to bring a folder of suitable artwork.

Assessment:

The work on the course is project/assignment based, and assessment is continuous throughout the course. Some units will be subject to external assessment. Each unit will be assessed and awarded with a formal grade of pass, merit or distinction. The course is completed with a major project and a public exhibition.

Progression from this course:

The extended diploma is equivalent to three A levels. By the end of this course, we aim to have developed your skills to the extent that you are able to present a high quality portfolio in a professional and confident manner. This, in conjunction with the successful completion of the course, will enable you to apply for foundation degrees or BA degree courses or the foundation studies art and design course at college.

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials / resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. There is a recommended starter art kit costing approximately £100. There will be visits to galleries or exhibitions and transport costs are not likely to be more than £50 in total for all trips.
