Course Content
The main focus of the Level 3 course will be concerned with developing and extending your skills in Art, Design and Creative Craft through client briefs. These include 2D and 3D skills in areas such as observational drawing, painting, print making, clay, glass, wood and metal. Practical work will be underpinned with contextual understanding along with design process and idea development techniques.
Practical activities within a specified area will allow you to develop existing skills and use the design process effectively to progress, refine and evaluate ideas and artefacts produced for a potential or actual client. This course is all about responding to a commercial brief and so you will be expected to interact with a client, work well for others and respond to their needs as commercial ventures. You will need to analyse and interpret client briefs, prepare plans and schedules for production and evaluate budgets set to ensure the work is achievable.
Assessment Method
There is no final examination as you will be set projects and assignments based on the units studied throughout the course. You will be assessed continuously in lessons and on the set assignments and will be given feedback on your work. All units of work will need to be completed and passed in order to achieve this qualification. You need to be able to express yourself well through written annotation and critical evaluations. You can also expect assignments to have theory elements as well as practical production work.
Progression
Students who successfully complete the Certificate may be eligible to progress onto further or higher level courses such as the BTEC Diploma Art & Design (Level 3), possibly the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Level 3) or even the Higher National Certificate/ Diploma in Art & Design (level 4/5) which we run here at Grantham College. From there students can go onto a range of jobs within the industry.
Additional Information
All applicants will be required to attend an interview at college where you will be required to bring a portfolio and/ or evidence of the art, design and craft work that you have produced. You will also be required to take some initial assessment and written tests which are all part of the standard procedures to assess capability for courses.
At least five hours of independent study time per week is required which could take the form of drawing development in a sketchbook, research into artists, meetings with clients and developing ideas for client briefs.
There will be a cost for art materials, sketchbooks and equipment and the cost varies depending on how much you require but the range could be from £35.00 - £75.00. There is an Art shop within the Arts Centre which stocks some of the materials and equipment at competitive prices.
Entry Requirements
As this course is aimed at adult learners who may be returning to education or progressing from a related level 2 course, formal qualifications are not as important as ability within art, design and crafts. However it is desirable that you already have a Level 2 qualification in creative craft, art and design or a related subject. You will need to demonstrate a strong commitment and enthusiasm for the subject area and bring evidence of your work to interview. You should have a good standard of literacy that will enable you to produce coherent observations, reviews and critical evaluations about your own and others work.
