About This Course

This full time course is designed to equip students with a wide range of make-up skills and techniques to enable them to gain successful work as a make-up artist in the media, or entertainment field. There is also an intensive route at level 2 to enable progression to this full time level 3. About This Course

This full time course is designed to equip students with a wide range of make-up skills and techniques to enable them to gain successful work as a make-up artist in the media, or entertainment field. There is also an intensive route at level 2 to enable progression to this full time level 3. During this course you will study the following qualifications: * Cosmetic Make-up - covering Day, evening and corrective make-up, eyelash perming/tinting, eyelash shaping, basic skin care * Hair and Media Diploma - remedial camouflage, fashion, media and photographic techniques . Fitting of facial hairpieces, dressing and fitting wigs (postiche). Hairdressing techniques will include cutting, colouring and styling, plus health and safety and human anatomy. * Airbrushing techniques including body painting. * A portfolio of evidence containing visual images (before and after), mood boards and assessment plans and written work to achieve the qualification This course is assessed continually using a variety of methods. These include practical assessments, written tests and written assignments, with extensive home study and research. Final end of module exams are on set dates by the awarding body.

Additional Notes

Material fees apply to cover product usage and learning resources whilst training. Professional hairdressing ,make-up equipment and uniform are set kits. The kit should be added to during the course as suggested by course team. You must provide your own models for the practical assessments throughout the course in order to participate in college competitions and excursions. Practice is essential on peers. The College uniform for this subject is black tunic/trousers and shoes. Suppliers visit the college to sell directly to students on a given date prior to the start of the course Students may wish to use own digital camera or the college camera is available You will be required to participate in relevant off-site work activities. Own transport may need to be provided and these activities are often during evenings and weekends. Enrichment - possible additional visits or trips can include - New York make-up seminar, IMATS make-up trade show plus spending money); Clothes Show and others. INDUSTRY INFORMATION Hours Your working hours would typically be 9am to 5pm, including Saturdays. Some salons offer evening appointments. You could work in a high street salon or beauty clinic, health spa, hotel, or on a cruise ship. You could also be self-employed, either working from home or visiting clients in their own homes. Skills and knowledge To become a make-up artist you would need: a friendly and welcoming manner the ability to make clients feel relaxed tact, diplomacy and the ability to listen and communicate well the ability to explain procedures clearly to clients business awareness and the ability to sell products and earn commission a high standard of personal hygiene and care for your appearance the ability to be on your feet for most of the day some knowledge of chemistry, anatomy and human biology a talent for applying nail art and make-up. Around 29% of the health and fitness workforce is aged 16-24 years (compared with 14% across all industries in the UK) South West - There are 53,700 people employed in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector, of which 4,100 are employed in the health and fitness industry. The region offers a range of opportunities for surfing, sailing, surf lifesaving, Tarka Trail, Camel Trail and coastal paths. Industry skills gaps in the region include: sport specific technical skills; communication; management; team-working; planning and preparing work; initiative; project management; and problem solving.

Entry Criteria

- Successful completion of literacy and numeracy assessment at interview - Sound educational background, including GCSE Grade A-C (or above) in English Language - A relevant level 2 vocational qualification - A mature attitude, self-motivation, enthusiasm, willingness to learn - Successful interview and references. - Anyone possessing prior qualifications in any area could possibly be accredited for that knowledge in consultation with the specialist tutor eg. Health and Safety, Hairdressing, Basic make-up

Progression Details

Course can lead to successful work within film, TV, theatre or as a freelance make-up artist. There are also opportunities available for progression onto Higher Education for further study at HND level, depending on experience or qualifications.
