If you like making things and enjoy working with wood, this could be an ideal career for you. Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings as part of construction projects. About This Course

If you like making things and enjoy working with wood, this could be an ideal career for you. Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings as part of construction projects. They also undertake flooring projects such as real wood and laminate installations. The most common way to become a carpenter or joiner is through an apprenticeship scheme. To get onto a scheme, you may need GCSEs in maths, English and science. As a carpenter or joiner, you may work in one or more of the following areas: · Cutting and shaping timber for floorboards, skirting boards and window frames · Making and assembling doors, window frames, staircases and fitted furniture · Fitting wooden structures, like floor and roof joists, roof timbers, staircases, partition walls, and door and window frames (first fixings) · Installing skirting boards, door surrounds, doors, cupboards and shelving, as well as door handles and locks (second fixings) · Building temporary wooden supports for concrete that is setting, for example on motorway bridge supports or building foundations (formwork) · Making and fitting interiors for shops, hotels, banks, offices and public buildings. To become a carpenter or joiner you will need to have: · Good practical skills · An organised approach to work · An eye for detail · The ability to follow technical drawings and plans · Good maths skills for measuring and working out angles · The ability to work as part of a team and unsupervised Salary range: £8000 - £28,000+ Average hours per week: 40

Additional Notes

Steel toe capped shoes/boots and sturdy clothing to protect your body will be required.

Entry Criteria

There are no mandatory academic requirements to start a career in the carpentry or joinery industry. Apprentices may need to demonstrate educational achievement to prospective employers.

Progression Details

Upon successfully completing your Level 2 apprenticeship you will be able to seek advanced apprenticeship placements or enter the work environment.

Gloucestershire College construction student Sophie Smith from Hucclecote, is currently employed at Stroud District Council as a building control technician. 21 year old Sophie began her career in the industry aged 18; after completing A Levels she started work as an apprentice with Gloucester City Council before progressing into her current role. “As a building control technician I work on the planning and construction phases of a building and am involved in projects ranging in size from a small domestic extension to a large city centre development”.
