Academic Progression:

A course designed to act as a bridge between craft and professional studies is available and gives you the opportunity to then progress to the Edexcel National Certificate in Building Studies. Alternatively you may wish to study for the Certificate and Diploma in Site Management.

Full Description:

There is a choice of three routes - Site Carpentry, Bench Joinery or Machine Woodwork

Site Carpentry
There are eight units - 3 core units and 5 trade specific units
Core Units

  • Carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others 3
  • Building construction technology 3

Trade Specific Units

  • First fixing operations
  • Second fixing operations
  • Erect structural carcassing components
  • Maintain non-structural and structural components
  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery

Bench Joinery

There are six units - 3 core units and 3 trade specific units

Core Units

  • Carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others 3
  • Building construction technology 3

Trade Specific Units

  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery
  • Manufacture complex shaped joinery products
  • Produce complex shaped joinery details

Machine Woodwork

There are nine units - 3 core units and 6 trade specific units

Core Units

  • Safe working practices
  • Information and communication with others 2
  • Construction technology 2

Trade Specific Units

  • Produce sawn wood and wood-based products
  • Produce and maintain woodmachining tooling
  • Produce curved wood and wood-based products
  • Produce wood and wood-based products using Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) and Numerically Controlled (NC) machinery
  • Resolve woodmachining problems
  • Maintain woodmachinery and equipment
