Nutrition and Hydration in the Elderly
This study day is designed to prepare/update carers who are working in all categories of health care and who care for vulnerable adults/clients, or may need to take action while caring for clients with dementia. The day is suitable for registered and unregistered carers, who in the course of their work assist elderly clients/residents with their activities of daily living. The content of the day is also suitable for both registered and unregistered carers who may need to maintain a safe environment in an emergency care setting until suitable help arrives.
The study day will be facilitated by Lecturers/Trainers who work in both Higher Education/University and Clinical Practice.

This study day fulfills the principles of the Common Induction Standards 2005 (CISi) and would be ideal for updating existing staff and for equipping new staff members with the skills they require to work safely in a health care environment.
This study day fulfills the requirements of Skills for Care;
Knowledge Set (January 2010).
Content of the Study Day:
- The aging process
- Review of digestive system and digestion
- Changes caused by aging
- Review of food hygiene
- Nutrition – issues around aging
- Suitable diets
- Hydration – fluid balance
- Managing food and fluid intake for elderly clients
- Research on hydration and the elderly
- Management of the adverse events (errors or incidents) in the
caring for clients with changing needs
- Reporting adverse events/reactions.
Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
