L4 HNC Building Studies
The HNC in Building Studies is offered at Coleg Cambria through
a collaborative agreement with Glyndwr University. The programme
comprises two year’s part-time (day-release) study and requires the
completion of ten vocationally-specific modules in order to achieve
the qualification. The aim of the programme is to prepare students
for a range of higher technical, professional and managerial
careers in construction by providing specialised studies which are
relevant to those vocations and professions within which students
are employed or are seeking employment.

the qualification. The aim of the programme is to prepare students
for a range of higher technical, professional and managerial

The programme has been structured so that students are able to
develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and
attitudes essential for successful performance in their working
life.
Teaching is by formal lecture supported by laboratory work,
materials testing, surveying fieldwork, field trips, site visits,
drawing and design work. The programme requires the completion of
the following modules;
First Year; Analytical Methods
Design Principles and Application
Management Principles
Science and Materials
Law and Contract
Second Year; Site Surveying
Technology
Health, Safety and Welfare
Building Services
Group Project
How you will gain the qualification
Assessment is undertaken through written submission, time-controlled examination and practical assessment, and is subject to both Glyndwr University and Coleg Cambria assessment procedures.
What qualifications you need
Candidates should possess at least one of the following:
• Nat. Cert./Dip. in Construction or Civil Engineering
• Extended Dip./Diploma in Const. or Civil Eng.
• Edexcel Advanced VCE (e.g. in Construction and the Built
Environment)
• City & Guilds FTC 6000
• Advanced Diploma/Certificate in Construction
• At least one A level pass, with appropriate supporting passes at GCSE grades in at least four subjects including Mathematics, a Science subject and a subject requiring the use of written English

ACADEMIC PROGRESSION
The Higher National Certificate in Building Studies has been
developed with a view to providing opportunities for students to
progress to other undergraduate programmes in their chosen fields,
particularly those offered within the School of the Natural and
Built Environment at Glyndwr University.
The Higher National Certificate in Building Studies provides
students with a higher technical qualification which will be
appropriate in pursuing career ambitions in the following sectors
of the construction industry;
