Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies (Horticulture)

This foundation level course is for individuals with an interest in gardening who may require some support in achieving their career aims. Students will develop the skills required to gain employment or to continue training. This programme has been designed to develop your gardening skills as well as improve literacy skills, spoken communication, numeracy, IT, problem solving and working as a team.

Although qualifications are not required, you will be assessed to ensure you have an interest in the course and a willingness to learn. Entry will be agreed through an interview process.

The course consists of a mixture of hands-on practical sessions and theory and will cover a number of units including:

• Developing performance
• Establishing plants
• Lawn maintenance
• Plant propagation
• Safe working practices
• Construction of surfaces
• Developing gardening skills

Functional Skills

You will also work towards nationally recognised Functional Skills qualifications (English, Maths and ICT).

Successful students may continue on to a Level 2 programme, such as the Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture. Alternatively you may wish to work towards a work-based learning qualification or an Apprenticeship. Students may also wish to gain employment in gardening.
