Mathematics has always been a particular strength of Teacher Education at our University. This course offers a route into a subject-based teaching career in either upper primary or lower secondary schools.
The Key Stages 2 and 3 programme trains students to teach the 7 to 14 age range. After completing this degree, you could be a maths specialist working in:
- Upper primary schools
- Middle schools
- Lower secondary schools

Practical School Experience
The pattern of school experience is usually:
- Year One - Three days a week (Mon- Wed) for five weeks in the autumn term and three weeks in the summer term in the same primary school
- Year Two - Six weeks in a secondary school and two weeks' 'specialist placement'
- Year Three - Ten weeks in either a primary or secondary school, according to your choice
Indicative Course Content
There are five main strands that run through the programmes:
- Study of Mathematics
- Mathematics Education
- Professional Values and Practice (general teaching skills such as lesson planning and classroom management)
- The 'Core' subjects in the Primary Curriculum (English, Maths and Science for KS2)
- Classroom Experience in Schools
Why this Course?

- Specialist placement in Year 2 gives trainees the opportunity to visit and work in an educational environment beyond the normal school classroom
- This programme has a parallel non-QTS option. If students change their mind about becoming teachers, they can transfer to the BA (Hons) Mathematics and Education

- Students acquire a range of communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills that will be invaluable in their teaching careers and beyond
- We positively encourage students from a range of educational backgrounds and find that the diversity of ages and experiences contributes to a stimulating and supportive learning environment for all
- Mature students are welcome with a minimum of 3 GCSEs (see Fact File) and some evidence of studying Maths beyond GCSE level
Two Year Route - Entry with Advanced Standing
You may be eligible for direct entry to Year 2 of this programme if you have suitable mathematics beyond A2 Level (worth 120 credits) or if you are a mature applicant with appropriate qualifications or experience.
Entry Requirements
3 Years Full Time, up to 6 years Part Time. Delivery: Full and Part Time.
