Based at the Isle of Wight College, this Foundation Degree provides a broad perspective of work with young children (0 - 8 years) and the course develops students' skills in the study of childhood from psychological, historical, cultural, sociological, social policy and philosophical viewpoints. It aims to give students an understanding of the diverse contexts in which children develop and learn. The course is delivered in collaboration with the University. It is designed for those working in a variety of early childhood settings, for example, reception classes, pre-schools, nurseries, children's health services and in social services family centres.

Indicative Course Content

The programme of study is delivered partly through taught sessions at the Isle of Wight College and partly through employer supported work-based learning. It is designed to support the development of the role of the early childhood worker through an intermediate level of study and can also provide progression towards gaining a full degree in Childhood Studies and then the PGCE leading to QTS or EYPS route.

Entry Requirements

Essential application criteria
Be employed or doing voluntary work in an Early Years childcare setting for a minimum of 12 hours a week.

Have the support of their employer or voluntary setting (unless self employed, for example, child minders).

Obtain a satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

Have 2 GCSEs at grade C or better, which may include English, (or written task for students without evidence of GCSE qualifications can be undertaken).

NVQ3/ CCLD in Early Years Care and education or an equivalent level three qualification for example DCE/NNEB or Advanced Apprenticeship

Be able to communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written Standard English.

Entry with Advanced Standing.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) or Advanced Experiential Learning (APEL) will be considered.
