This course is an excellent preparation for working with children and their families. It gives you a firm foundation in child development, law and ethics, and safeguarding children. Many challenges to children are explored and contemporary issues debated. The content is based on the Every Child Matters Report, 2003 and the Children Act, 2004.

The programme aims to challenge your ideas of children and families, and enable you to identify and respond to their needs regardless of their circumstances. It also offers a choice of modules, high-quality teaching, strong tutorial support and academic counselling.

The field continues to open up via international, national and local imperatives and initiatives. Past students have embarked on careers in teaching or social work, as family liaison workers, with the probation service, or in youth and community work, sometimes after further education and/or training.

Entry requirements Successful completion of a related foundation degree or HND.

Applicants from courses based at institutions other than University of Cumbria will be assessed on their suitability depending upon the modules they have studied.
