Overview

German is the most widely spoken language in Europe after English and Russian. It is the mother tongue of a quarter of all Europeans and an official language in no less than seven European countries. Situated at the heart of Europe, Germany is the continent's largest economy, the UK's main trading partner, and a major political force behind the EU. Its importance is growing with expansion eastwards. Over the centuries, Germany has made outstanding contributions to world culture and scientific progress.
