Units covered Mandatory units include:

  • Confirming work activities and resources for tan occupational area in the workplace
  • Develop and maintaining good occupational working relationships
  • Confirming the occupational method in the workplace
  • Install first fixing components (installing windows, door frames, linings, floorboards, erecting partitions, plaster boarding and joinery tasks prior to plasterwork except structural components)
  • Install second fix components (installing kitchens, boxing in pipes, hanging doors, cutting and fitting skirting and architraves)
  • Erecting structural carcassing components. (erecting pitched and flat roofs, laying floor joists)
  • Conform to workplace safety

Optional units include

  • Maintain non structural carpentry in the workplace (carrying out repairs to joinery)
  • Erecting complex structural carcassing components in the workplace. (erecting hip roofs, dormer windows etc)
  • Setting up and using fixed or transportable metalworking machinery in the workplace
  • Setting up and using fixed or transportable woodworking machinery in the workplace

Entry requirements Although there are no formal entry requirements, all learners must have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification. In most cases the Advanced Apprenticeship would be a progression after completing Apprenticeship. All learners entering the advanced apprenticeship programme will undertake an initial assessment. Who is it for? The Advanced Apprenticeship is aimed at learners who have completed an Apprenticeship and wish to progress within the construction industry. CostAged 16-18

Aged 24 and over

Total People require employers to make a contribution towards the cost for all learners aged 24 years and over, embarking on an Apprenticeship or Advanced Apprenticeship programme.

Duration 12 – 18 months Start date Usually September each year but Learners may start a Diploma at any time by agreement between Total People and employer. Assessment method A full NVQ Diploma portfolio covering all necessary units will be completed in the workplace through a variety of assessment methods including:

  • Direct observation of the learner carrying out tasks
  • Witness testimonies
  • Photographic evidence
  • Written observations

Personal qualities The learner should be physically fit, able to work outside and have basic communication and numerical skills. Further progression Achievement of this programme could provide opportunities too progress to further qualifications and training such as Technical Supervisory and management qualifications or positions within their organisation.
