Course Content
Thediploma contains three distinct units that form the basis of the supervision training.
Introduction to Supervision
This introductory unit will range over a variety of elements that bring the supervisory relationship into focus. It is a relationship quite different from many others but has some elements in common with teaching and with counselling but the contract is different and the boundaries have to be clear. It will include:
- The supervisory relationship, the purpose of supervision
- Methods of supervision, developmental stages in supervision
- Values and ethics in a supervisory context
- Bands of supervision

Models and Frameworks of Supervision
This unit will include a theoretical history of supervision within
counselling, social work and medicine.
The introduction to a range of supervision and developmental models
including:
- Shohet and Hawkins Process Model
- Holloways Systems Model
- Page and Woskett's Cyclical Model
- Carroll's Generic Tasks of Supervision
- A Transactional Analytic Model of Supervision
- Seven Level Model
Practising Ethical Supervision
Ethical dilemmas in supervision – how to create safety and
relationship and a methodology of working with such difficult
areas. This will include discussion of the philosophical
underpinning of ethics (Thompson).The discussion of the various
codes of ethics that inform our practice, models of ethical
behaviour and the development of moral awareness (Kohlberg). Risk
assessment how to deal with issues of competence and incompetence.
How to make ethical decisions within supervision and working with
live issues with supervisees to help raise their level of awareness
to ethically sensitive subjects.
