History

The Iron Mill is a long established educational and training organisation and a place of high professional standards. The institute is based in Devon in the South-West of England and has been established for nearly 30 years. The Iron Mill was pioneered by Julie Hewson, the current Director in the early eighties as a way of combining Psychology, Art and Sociology in the transformatory process of Clinical and Organisational Applications. This has led to a range of nationally and internationally accredited trainings in Psychotherapy, Counselling, Supervision, Coaching and Specialist applications.

It is known both nationally and internationally as a place of excellence and there is regular cooperation between the Iron Mill and Institutes across Europe and the United States. In addition there is a culture of courtesy, care, cooperation and creativity plus a strong sense of a learning community where graduates come back again and again to say hello or to refresh themselves with one of the Iron Mill Institute's range of professional development workshops.

We offer a range of professionally accredited training in the fields of counselling, psychotherapy, supervision, coaching and dramatherapy. We also have a rich and varied continuing professional development programme (CPD) available to the qualified professional or for those just wanting to sample what we offer.

The Institute has grown and flourished over the years moving to Exeter from a more remote location in 2000 (shown in the picture above). It has attracted students from a range of cultural, religious and minority groups, and the range of professions that have been represented here during this time has been astonishing. Each person brings a richness and diversity to the Iron Mill and we are blessed with teachers and trainers of high quality and commitment with a range of excellent practitioners, plus a dedicated and welcoming administrative team, who provide important back up and support for the people studying here.

The Institute is now based in a beautiful historic building in the centre of Exeter. The location has enabled more people to gain access to our trainings and has helped to build on the existing foundations with an increasing diversity to both the learning community and the range of courses we can offer. Please take some time to read the 'About Exeter' page as the city has a lot to offer while you study with us.

Why choose Iron Mill?

TRAINING

Our training programmes cover a wide range of theories and are constantly updated to keep up with current theories and legislation. The majority of programmes are accredited by a National or European body that is recognised in the profession.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

The training programmes are designed to meet the requirements of the relevant professional bodies to allow candidates to complete their professional registration. These bodies include BACP, UKCP and EAS. Details of these bodies can be found in the FAQ section of this website or by visiting their website (please click on the links above).

QUALITY

Our professional training is delivered by experienced practioners and teachers all bringing their own unique portfolio of skills to the programme. Our reputation has been built over several decades and graduates have great success when entering the profession. Our quality standards are carefully monitored both internally and externally by our accrediting bodies and through our partnerships with Strode College and the University of Worcester.

LOCATION / BUILDING

We are located in the centre of Exeter in the heart of the South West. Exeter is accessible by all transport links including bus, rail and air. We have students who travel from all over the UK to undertake our training. The institute is based in a beautiful historic building and has three comfortable teaching rooms (two with breakout areas) all with drinks facilities.  The office is based on site and it has a resources room, including the library, located right next door to it.

PART-TIME TRAINING

All of our training is available part-time and is normally available one day per week or one weekend a month. This enables you to fit the courses around any work commitments.

TASTER DAYS

We offer taster days for all the longer training as we understand the commitment needed to complete a programme of this type. The taster day allows you to sample what we can offer and the cost of the taster day is deducted from your course fees should you wish to continue. These days are also useful in the own right and you will leave with some new tools even if you decide not to continue onto further training.

101 INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOPS

In addition to the Taster days outlined above we also have two-day Introduction workshops for the four main training areas, Counselling, TA Psychotherapy, Supervison and Coaching. These are more in-depth workshops that in some cases form part of the training hours (TA Psychotherapy & Coaching) of the programme and will be a requirement of the course.
