Subsidiary Diploma:

part of the Professional Development unit, you will be expected to
successfully complete a minimum of 50 hours work experience.
Diploma:
Successful completion of the subsidiary diploma will make up half
of the diploma. In addition to the 6 units you will already have
achieved, you would also complete the following units: Fundamentals
of Anatomy and Physiology; Sociology; Psychology; Values and
Planning; Caring for Children and Young People; Technology in
Health and Social Care Services; Personal and Professional
Development in Health and Social Care. As part of the Professional
Development Unit, you will be expected to successfully complete a
minimum of 100 hours work experience. It is expected that you would
complete this course by the end of April in the second year of your
course.
Extended Diploma:
Following successful completion of the subsidiary diploma and
diploma, the additional units that make up the full extended
diploma are: Research Methods; Nutrition for Health and Social
Care; Complementary Therapies; Caring for Older People; Applied
Psychology; Vocational Experience.
To complete the Vocational Experience Unit, you would need to
successfully complete 200 hours of work experience. This is in
additional to the hours completed for the Certificate.
You will also study Information Technology as a Key Skill and may
have the opportunity to study for the following: First Aid at Work;
Food Hygiene Certificate; Manual Handling Training. You may also be
able to re-sit GCSE maths or English if necessary.
End Qualification:
Extended diploma courses have 3 achievement points: you will work towards the subsidiary diploma qualification in the first year of the course and will have the opportunity to work towards either the diploma or the extended diploma in the second year.
Entry Requirements:
Interview required
5 GCSEs grade A* to C, inclusive of English Language. Alternatives include BTEC First Diploma in Care at Merit or above, OR successful completion of any appropriate full Level 2 award in related disciplines. All Learners will be expected to provide a suitable Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check to enable work placements. Progression in to the Second Year of the course will be determined by the appropriate achievement of Units in Year One, aligned to target grades agreed at the start of the course. For some learners who have not successfully met all the Faculty performance expectations an agreed Contract for Learning will be applied in Year 2.
Assessment:
Assessment is continuous through assignment work, projects, case studies individually and in groups. Grades are awarded for each unit at Pass, Merit or Distinction, which leads to an overall grade for the full award.
Progression from this course:
Students who successfully complete the National Award will be encouraged to study towards the Extended diploma can lead to higher education in health or social care towards careers such as nursing, midwifery and social work.

Course Costs:
All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials / resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. There may be some additional costs for your course. These will include text books, educational trips and the option to purchase Faculty clothing. The costs will be made known to you at interview. There is also a requirement for you to have a CRB check. This can be obtained through the college but the cost is the responsibility of the student.
