The Programme

This course is an ideal introduction to the world of Health and Social Care for students who do not have any qualifications. This programme is made up of a Health and Social Care qualification, a Personal and Social Development qualification as well as Functional Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT. The topics included in this programme include working with children and young people; communication skills; equality and diversity; and meeting the needs of users of health and social care services.

As part of the Personal and Social Development qualification you will learn about things such as Rights and Responsibilities at Work; Managing Your Money; and Healthy Lifestyles. Functional Skills in Mathematics, English and ICT are also part of this programme.

As part of this programme you will complete work placements where you will be able to put what you learn in lessons into practise and develop the skills needed to work with Health and Social Care service users.

The Programme Content

This is a one year full time Level 1 programme for individuals who are interested in finding out about the work in the Health and Social Care sector. There are some exams but most of it is assessed through coursework. Progression to a Level 2 course is possible for those who complete and pass all the different parts of this course. A weekly work placement is a core part of this course which allows individuals to use what they learn in the classroom in a real work setting.

Entry Requirements

You do not need any qualifications for this programme but at your interview you will need to show that you have a real interest in working in the Health and Social Care sector.

You will need to have a satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check which will show any cautions as well as convictions. If you have any issues on your CRB you will need to discuss this with us as some work placement settings will not allow you to attend without a clear CRB.

Costs

You will have to pay for an enhanced CRB check, please see CRB Checks information below. You will have to pay for the costs of trips and visits that are part of your course. You will also need a memory stick to store your work on and money for printing.

Progression

If you are successful on this course you could apply for the Level 2 Health and Social Care Programme or a Level 2 Health and Social Care Apprenticeship, both of which will build on the knowledge gained on this course.
