Extended Project Qualification

The Extended Project Qualification is part of the government’s initiative to ‘stretch and challenge’ young people in an area of work that they are already studying or in which they have a particular interest.

The EPQ will develop study outside of your main programme and will include attending a lesson each week and time for independent study.

Extended Project Qualification

The Extended Project Qualification is part of the government’s initiative to ‘stretch and challenge’ young people in an area of work that they are already studying or in which they have a particular interest.

The EPQ will develop study outside of your main programme and will include attending a lesson each week and time for independent study.

Why should you take the Extended Project Qualification?

This qualification allows you to develop your learning in one or more of your A level subjects. It emphasizes your ability to participate in independent research and your ability to plan and carry out a project. You will also be demonstrating these skills to universities and potential employers who find selection of candidates difficult.

You will also achieve a Level 3 qualification which is the equivalent of an AS Level qualification.

Course Content

The main content of the course is as follows:

  • Select a topic/area of interest that will develop your studies in a particular subject
  • Identify the aims and objectives of the project and produce a project plan
  • Research and carry out the project, providing evidence of evaluation at each stage
  • Presentation of project material using either traditional or technology based formats

Entry Requirements

This course is offered to second year A Level students only who have shown particular aptitude in a subject area. .

Examples of Extended Projects

Media: A documentary exploring the issues behind the decline of theatre audience while cinema remains popular

Languages: Did Gustave Flaubert’s novel, Madame Bovary, revolutionise French Literature, culture and attitudes?

Art: Public Art in Bristol from high art to low culture; who chooses it? What is the impact of it on its surroundings and what do people think?
