Who is the course for?

For students who want to study on a practical, work-related one year course. It introduces learners to the skills and knowledge needed to understand how businesses work and operate. It is an excellent foundation for advancing onto level 3 qualifications in a variety of subjects.

Methods of Teaching and Learning

This course is taught by well qualified and experienced staff. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations.

Enrichment

The course potentially includes a work experience placement (subject to availability).

Methods of Assessment

This course is assessed by EDEXCEL through practical projects and assignments and one unit is assessed through an externally marked exam. Internally assessed units are assessed by the college and then moderated by another assessor to ensure consistency across all grades.

Resources

The college has excellent ICT facilities and internet access, and you will be completing all your assignments using Office software. In addition, you will have access to text books, case studies, as well as visits to real businesses.

Links with Employers

Assignments are based on real business situations and where possible visits are organised and speakers invited in. It is hoped that we will be able to add a work experience placement.

Progression

This is an excellent course for developing a range of skills needed in either the workplace or for further study. Many students stay in education and progress onto level 3 courses subject to achieving the correct entry requirements.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSE passes at grade D.

Qualification

At the end of the course you should have achieved an Edexcel Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Business. An overall grade, pass, merit or distinction / distinction * is awarded. This is equivalent to four GCSE’s at C grade, B grade, or an A / A* grade respectively.

Additional Costs

During the course students are charged for printing and there are also costs incurred when privately buying reliable storage devices to back up their electronic files. Students are expected to present their assignments in a printed format and in plastic wallets. Students may attend a two week work placement in the Spring term and they will be responsible for their own transport arrangements. In addition, day-trips / visits form a valuable part of the course which all students are expected to attend. These should cost no more than approximately £30 per trip.
