The course also provides a platform for further educational and professional qualifications.
In Year 1 you will be introduced to necessary underpinning knowledge and understanding in the fields of numeracy, materials, science, construction technology and health and safety. The integrated nature of the industry is embedded within these subjects. In Year 2, you'll focus on the more specialised areas of land surveying, geotechnics and structural analysis and design as well as contributing to a group project. Some of these subjects will be supported by significant practical work and field exercises.

The University has a long track record of successfully delivering a programme of Higher National Built Environment courses including Civil Engineering. Our approachable, experienced staff strive to ensure that you're learning fits in accordance with the rigorous BTEC/Edexel guidelines.
This HNC provides an academic platform to enter a number of post HNC courses, such as full or part-time degrees, and the course is approved by the Joint Board of Moderators through the Institution of Civil Engineers as meeting the educational requirements for the professional qualification of Engineering Technician.

The HNC Civil Engineering remains highly vocational focusing the practical application of knowledge and understanding. The balance between the practical and theoretical enables students from a variety of backgrounds to benefit from the course.
Course content

The units you’ll study are a mixture of course specific and units which are common to other Construction Higher Nationals:
- Civil Engineering Construction Technology
- Mathematics
- Civil Engineering Materials and Mechanics.
Year 2
- Civil Engineering Surveying
- Structural Analysis and Design
- Geotechnics.

- Vocational and practical elements to learning such as laboratory work, surveying exercises and an assessed field visit to the Isle of Wight. An integrated group project designed to provide experience of working with all disciplines within the Construction Industry.
- The programme was developed in consultation with local employers.
- The Higher National Certificate is approved by the Joint Board of Moderators through the Institution of Civil Engineers as being appropriate for the educational requirements for the professional grade of Engineering Technician.
- Day-long assessed field exercise on the Isle of Wight; you will investigate the engineering characteristics of rock and soil, and the scale and type of slope instability encountered in this area.
- Access to the Maritime and Technology Faculties laboratory suite which incorporates two construction specific laboratories and a studio.
- Wide range of IT resource centre equipment, housing over 500 PCs. All are fully networked using Novell Netware and give you free Internet and email access.
- Programme taught by approachable, friendly and professionally qualified staff.
Assessment
The majority of units are assessed using a combination of assignment work and formal end of year examinations.

The HNC will enable you to contribute to the world of work as a technician within the Civil Engineering or Construction industries.
Projects/work experience
The Faculty has strong industrial links within the Construction Industry and can sometimes offer industrial projects in partnership with companies.

Fees
Fees for the 2012/13 academic year are:
£3,710 pa for UK and EU students. Overseas students, please contact the faculty for details of fees. Students also pay an Edexcel Registration fee, contact the faculty office for details.
