Civil Engineering - BEng/BEng(Hons) - Full-time

As a civil engineer, you'll be responsible for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of structures and transport networks. We teach you how to plan and deliver the elements that make these up, such as airports, roads, bridges and railways. We offer the opportunity to apply theory to practice with site visits (some overseas) and an industry based work placement.

We offer the opportunity to apply theory to practice with site visits (some overseas) and an industry based work placement. Placements are particularly useful in helping you decide your future career goals and may even lead to guaranteed employment on graduation. While you'll study civil engineering throughout your degree, you may decide to specialise in Civil and Transportation Engineering after your second year. If that's the case, the course offers the flexibility to switch at that point. The choice is yours. The honours course is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers, The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation and the Institution of Structural Engineers, meaning you'll receive a highly regarded professional qualification as well as a degree. BEng (Hons) Accredited CEng (Partial) This Degree is accredited as: fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Progression to the MEng Civil Engineering/Civil & Transportation Engineering course is possible after Year 3. Completion of this course meets the academic requirements of a Chartered Engineer. You'll develop the skills needed to plan, design, construct and manage major infrastructure, including surveying, structural analysis, computer-aided design and construction methods. What's involved Based over four years, the course will involve lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and independent study. Year 1 Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering Principles, Foundation Mathematics, Construction Surveying, Civil Engineering Materials, plus one optional module Year 2 Fluid Mechanics, Structural Analysis & Design, Intermediate Mathematics, Soil Mechanics, Transport Policy Systems, plus one optional module Year 3 Water Resources Engineering, Further Intermediate Mathematics, Advanced Project Management, Structural Engineering and one elective module from either Digital Mapping & GIS, Methods of Construction, Network Management* or English as a Foreign Language, plus either Highway Engineering* or Transport Appraisal & Highway Design* Year 4 Analytical Transport Planning, Geotechnical & Geo-environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering, Honours Project or Work Placement, plus one elective module from Engineering Law & Contract Procedures, Traffic Models & Public Transport*, or Geomechanics, Analysis & Modelling Choices must include at least two marked with *.
