Industrial focus

Employability is at the heart of this course. Students engage in real-world issues through client briefs, work-based learning, community coaching, and volunteering and innovation projects, all of which will help prepare you for employment.

We also have excellent links with local and national sports organisations and clubs. Many contribute to our courses and provide relevant part-time work opportunities.

Course content

Year 1

Six core units:

  • Introduction to Research and Study Skills
  • Sport in Society
  • Principles of Coaching
  • Coaching and volunteering for Sport Development
  • Introduction to Sport Management
  • Principles of Sport Development.

Year 2

Five core units and one option unit:

  • Policy and Practices of Sport Development
  • Sport Coaching and Development
  • Sociology of Sport
  • Research Methods for Sport
  • Coaching Children and Young Performers.

Options:

  • Events Organisation
  • Diet and Nutrition
  • Curriculum Plus (excluding Sport Coaching in the Community)
  • Sport and the Law
  • Applied Techniques in Sport Psychology
  • Sports Massage
  • Event Sponsorship
  • Extreme Sports.

Year 3

Four core units and two option units:

  • Dissertation OR Research Project (40 or 20 credits)
  • Coaching and Community Development
  • Strategic Sports Development.

Assessment

Essays, written examinations, seminar presentations, reports, case studies, demonstrations, professional symposiums, student-led projects and a dissertation.

Projects/work experience

Students are encouraged to gain work experience through volunteering or work placements with local sports clubs, fitness clubs, sports centres and summer camps. For those wishing to progress on to a PGCE in Physical Education, there are placements available with local schools.
