This Advanced Apprenticeship programme in engineering is ideal for people who have have already completed a Level 2 qualification in engineering, or who is interested in pursuing a career in the engineering industry.

Following a discussion with the apprentice, employer and assessor, a suitable pathway for the Level 3 is chosen to reflect the role of the apprentice within the company. You will follow one of these two pathways:

- electrical/electronic pathway

You learn the following:

- NVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations (PEO)

- NVQ Level 3 Engineering (Pathway is chosen to reflect the job role within the workplace)
- Functional Skills in English, maths and IT (all at Level 2)
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

During the first year you will normally undertake the EAL NVQ units in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO), the BTEC Sub-Diploma in Engineering, relevant functional skills and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills within the college environment.

During the second year you will normally:
- complete the Edexcel Technical certificate - BTEC Diploma in Engineering
- start the EAL NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma
- start Employment Rights and Responsibilities
You complete NVQ Level 3 during the 3rd year.
Assignments give you the opportunity to prepare written work based on your own observations.

Additionally, assessment may be carried out by tutor observations and/or employer witness statements. An assessor will visit you at your place of work every four to six weeks.

This is a work-based course that builds the skills required to undertake engineering activities in a variety of industries. All aspects of the Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship framework will be covered over 3 years.

You gain practical and theoretical skills including hand skills, maths for technicians, mechanical or electrical principles, health and safety and more.

As a guide, the Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship is suitable for applicants who have five GCSEs grade C or above including maths, English, and a science.

This is not a fixed rule but may vary according to the pathway chosen (craft or technician), and the suitability of individual applicants (some employers may demand higher grades).

You need to be employed in a related job role for at least 30 hours per week.

If you have been working in the industry for a considerable time and you and your employer consider that you may be able to enter directly at advanced level, this may be possible. However, you will be invited to complete an initial assessment of your maths and English skills and an interview to assess your motivation and commitment.

We will discuss with your employer the training they will be providing in the workplace which will be needed to ensure that you are able to complete this programme.

On successful completion you could consider further training in higher education (subject to requirements).
