This course is aimed at students who are ready and qualified for a higher level business course, whether coming direct from school or progressing from a Level 2 business course. It offers a fascinating insight into how the commercial world works. You will learn about the structure of business organisations and the processes involved in planning, setting up and running a business venture such as management and human resources, finance, marketing, basic economics and ethics, and the importance of innovation and creativity in business. Initially in year one you will study for a Subsidiary Diploma. Successful students will be invited to study for the Extended Diploma which they will complete in year two of the course.

You will learn about the legal forms of business ownership, financial accounting, business documentation, communication in businesses, the structure interpretation and use of financial documents, and how they are used in a business environment. In addition specialist units are available such as Marketing, Human Resources, Accountancy, Event Management, Team Development, Creative Product Promotion, Retail and Law. This course is varied: you could for example develop an idea for a new product or service, draw up a business start-up and implementation plan, present it to investors, sell your product or service, develop a business event, lead a team of people or produce a case study on an ethical business issue.



Activities range from academic case study work to developing practical business skills and work experience. There is also a variety of business related excursions and a residential trip during the course of your studies. All eighteen units are assessed by internally based assignment which may involve course work or business skills demonstration. The course also features an outward bound residential trip visits to London and to local businesses a relevant work placement in your first year the ‘Make Your Mark’ Enterprise Challenge Competition and other trips to places of interest such as the London Marketing Museum and the O2.Assessment is carried out using a variety of assessment methods including individual work projects group work presentations team leading research case studies.

You benefit from workshop facilities in a computer suite with computers that enable you to complete your course assessments. There are also open access computer resources in the library. Successful completion can lead to employment at a junior management level perhaps as an Account Executive or Office Supervisor or to a higher education course such as a BA (Hons) Business Degree or Foundation Degree. The full BTEC Extended Diploma carries the same UCAS points value as three A levels. The course will develop your employability through the day-to-day course activities such as teamworking, group and individual activities. This will also assist in improving your English Maths and ICT skills. This will also help you to complete your course work and prepare you for further independent study or employment. You will also learn how to become a more independent learner as the course will develop your analytical and critical thinking skills as well as team working and leadership skills.

Five GCSE grades A*C including English Language and Maths or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Merit with Functional Skills at Level 2 in English and Maths. If invited for interview you will initially take part in an introduction to the course and your interview will follow from there.

On successful completion of the course you can progress to a relevant degree course or directly into employment in supervisory or trainee management posts.
